Gear grinding is the finishing process that transforms a hobbed or heat-treated gear blank into a precision component. It corrects distortion from heat treatment, refines tooth profile and lead accuracy, and produces the smooth surface finish that determines mesh quality, noise level, and service life. For gears operating at high load or high speed, grinding is not optional—it is essential.
Hanwei's gear grinding department is equipped with three machine classes that together cover the full range of industrial gear sizes:
- 2.5 m Höfler grinder: the precision benchmark for gears up to 2.5 m diameter, delivering DIN Grade 4–6 accuracy with controlled surface finish
- 5 m NILES grinder: workhorse for mid-to-large gears, widely proven in cement and mining industry applications
- 16 m CNC form grinder: one of the largest gear grinding machines in operation anywhere, capable of finish-grinding girth gears up to 16 m diameter with module up to 50
The 16 m CNC form grinder is our flagship capability. It uses single-point CBN form grinding wheels that can be dressed to any tooth profile, including modified involutes with tip relief and root fillet optimization. CNC-controlled dressing ensures repeatable accuracy across every gear we produce. Surface hardness after grinding: up to 380 HB.
We grind both external and internal teeth, spur and helical configurations, and all four of our material-process routes (cast, forged, cast-forged welded, forged-steel-plate welded). Post-grinding inspection includes gear measurement reports with full tooth profile, lead, pitch, and runout data. Every gear ships with documented evidence of conformance to your specified accuracy grade.
