Gear hobbing is the most productive method for cutting gear teeth on cylindrical workpieces, and it remains the backbone of gear manufacturing worldwide. For large industrial gears and girth rings, hobbing defines the fundamental tooth geometry that all subsequent finishing operations build upon. Accuracy at the hobbing stage directly determines the quality ceiling of the finished gear.

Hanwei operates 12 gear hobbing and milling machines spanning 1 m to 16 m capacity, including both vertical and horizontal configurations. This fleet—one of the largest in China's specialist gear manufacturing sector—allows us to hob gears across the full industrial size range, from small pinions to the largest mill girth gears, without outsourcing.

Our 16 m vertical hobbing machine handles workpieces up to 16 m in diameter and 60 tonnes in weight. For girth gears in the 8–16 m range, this machine's rigid structure and precision indexing system maintain tooth spacing accuracy that minimizes grinding stock, reducing both grinding time and heat generation in the finish process. Module capability extends to 50, covering the extra-coarse tooth profiles used in heavy mining and cement mill drives. We hob both external and internal gear teeth, spur and helical configurations, and single-start or multi-start worms.
