Heavy-Duty Helical Bevel Gear for Mining Shovel Drive Systems

Bevel gears transmit power between intersecting axes—most commonly at 90 degrees. They are indispensable wherever a drive must change direction within a compact envelope: mill drive pinions, crane slewing mechanisms, mining shovel swing drives, and differential gearboxes. The conical pitch surface makes bevel gear geometry fundamentally more complex than cylindrical gears, and manufacturing accuracy is critical because misalignment causes concentrated edge loading that rapidly destroys the tooth surface.

Hanwei produces straight, spiral, and zero-bevel gears for industrial applications. Our manufacturing process combines precision CNC gear cutting with finish grinding where the application demands it—particularly for spiral bevel gears in high-speed or high-load service, where we achieve DIN Grade 6 accuracy. Size capability ranges from small differential gears to large mill drive bevel sets up to 3 m in outer cone distance. Module capacity extends to 50, and surface hardness reaches 380 HB, enabling us to serve the full spectrum from moderate-duty crane drives to heavy mining excavator swing gears.

Material selection follows the same rigorous standards as our girth gear production: alloy steels with controlled hardening for the right balance of surface wear resistance and core toughness. For spiral bevel gears subjected to high impact, we recommend case-carburized alloy steel with a hard, wear-resistant case over a ductile core. Our reverse-engineering capability is particularly valuable for bevel gears, where original OEM drawings are rarely available. We can measure existing gear sets and produce geometrically matched replacements.
