Worm gears provide high reduction ratios in a single stage—typically 10:1 to 60:1—making them the compact solution for conveyors, elevators, winches, and rotary positioning mechanisms. Their self-locking capability at high ratios is a built-in safety feature in hoisting and lifting applications, preventing back-driving under load.

The fundamental challenge of worm gearing is sliding contact. Unlike spur or helical gears, where teeth roll across each other, worm gear teeth slide continuously, generating heat and demanding materials with excellent anti-scuffing and anti-wear properties. The worm wheel (typically bronze or brass) must run against a hardened steel worm to survive.
